Quicker approval of building permits

Included in several new measures being implemented as part of local government reform, Jamaicans can expect to see a significant improvement in the time it takes to process applications for buildings and subdivisions. Robert Montague, Minister with responsibility for Local Government Affairs, recently confirmed that the Government was in the final stages of promulgating the new Building Act, which proposes a speeding-up of the existing building and subdivision approval process.

Under the new Building Act, the minister confirmed that any building under 3,000 sq ft no longer has to go to Kingston for approval, as such authority now resides with the local parish council, who would also be responsible for oversight of any subdivision of less than ten lots. These measures he said should see 90 per cent of all building and subdivision applications submitted to local parish councils being approved within 90 days, as against taking an average 18 months previously.

New developer promises to cut house prices

A new development company,  Magwall Jamaica, says that by using a fairly new building technology, structural insulated panels (SIPs), it will be able to build homes at less than half the cost and in a fraction of the time it typically takes to build a house in Jamaica using traditional methods. Magwall Jamaica uses a patented building system which was developed in Canada to address residential and commercial construction needs in that country. The Magwall building system is tested and proven to be able to stand up to strong hurricanes and earthquakes, and is fire, termite and mold proof.

Magwall is a “green” product”, which is chemical free, hypo-allergenic and will not give off any dangerous gases or vapour, and is basically maintenance free. It is is used widely across North America and Central America. Read more at http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/business/VIDEO--New-developer-to-cut-house-prices-by-half
