Well, it's finally over ... the 2008 Olympics will certainly be remembered for some time to come. For the US, the record 8 medals earned by swimming phenom Michael Phelps will surely be the topic of many an interview for some time to come (stateside, anyways), but most people will say that was expected. For the athletics world however, it's another thing altogether.
There is no doubt that the image and spirit of Jamaica is now emblazoned in the brains of anyone even remotely interested in track and field. Usain Bolt shattered the mens 100m (9.69 secs) and 200m (19.30 secs) world records and olympics records, barely breaking a sweat in the 100m and celebrating from 20 metres away from the finish line in a controversial but certainly entertaining fashion. The mens 4x100m team of Usain Bolt, Michael Frater, Asafa Powell and Nesta Carter also decimated the previous world record in a new time of 37.10 secs, to give Usain Bolt his 3rd gold medal and 3rd world record.
Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser, Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson ran 1-2-2 in the womens 100m finals, Veronica Campbell-Brown defended her 200m title successfully to claim the gold medal, with Kerron Stewart getting bronze. Shericka Williams overtook Richards in the womens 400m to claim the silver in 49.69 seconds and only a failed baton exchange in the womens 4x100m relay prevented Jamaica from having a chance at sweeping both the mens and womens sprint finals. We were not done yet though, as Melaine Walker won the womens 400m in fine style and we took the bronze medal in the womens 4x400m relay!
So Puma sales are through the roof, our girls are all smiles, the new male sprint king Usain Bolt is getting a BMW M3 and will receive some prime ocean view property for his performances, and Asafa Powell has a gold medal at last. What else can we say, ... Well done, team Jamaica!!!
